Moscow Jazz Orchestra jubilee concert
Year 2019 is the 20th anniversary of the Moscow Jazz Orchestra. Certainly, few celebratory events are planned, and one of them is the very special one, called “Triumph of the Orchestra” – a concert in the Big Hall of “Zaryadye”.
February 23 is the national holiday Fatherland Defender's Day, and on this day the legendary orchestra will perform the best of its repertoire.
Well-known pieces by the world and Russian jazz masters of, as well as the music by Nick Levinovsky written specially for the orchestra, are in the set-list.
During the years, the Moscow Jazz Orchestra gained a reputation of a world’s leading orchestras, as well as a main catalyst for development of Russia’s jazz art. All those 20 years the musicians represent this country at the most prestigious European, Asian, and American festivals. In 2017, the big band was the headliner of World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi. In 2018 it became the first ever orchestra to perform at the planet’s main jazz event, “All-Star Global Concert” of the International Jazz Day.
For the past five years alone, the collective (named “a constellation of virtuosi” by JazzTimes magazine) has played more than 500 concerts in Russia, and toured South Korea, India, China, Italy, Canada, France, Great Britain, Latvia, Germany, and USA. The orchestra played at the world’s best venues with many jazz legends such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Natalie Cole, New York Voices, Kevin Mahogany, George Benson, Gino Vannelli, Wynton Marsalis, Larry Coryell, Billy Cobham, Bill Evans, Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Gary Burton, Toots Thielemans, Kurt Elling, and Patti Austin among others.
Igor Butman as the leader of the orchestra doesn’t limit himself to jazz mainstream, indeed, he loves crossover. The big band, for instance, frequently performs with “Grammy”-winning violist Yuri Bashmet and his chamber ensemble “Moscow Soloists”, as well as with popular Russian artists.
