The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The largest male monastery, it is now home to over 300 monks. The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill. Ever since, its history has been quite dramatic.

This concert is a tribute to archimandrite Matfey (Mormil) who has been leader and chorister of the Bratsky choir of The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius since 1961. The music of Father Matfey has defined the development of church choire singing, and it its classical tradition now. Father Matfey has been working for many years to make the choir world famous. In the world outside Russia, the culture of Russian church singing is well known and well-remembered due to the frequent tours of the choir. 

In the year 2000, the united choir of Moscow Spiritual Academy and Trinity St. Sergius Lavra performed at the Holy Land. When His Holiness Patriarch Alexy the Second visited dioceses, the choir and its famous chorister accompanied him in his visits. They sang at the Patriarchs’ worships. 

Students and graduates of Moscow Spiritual Academy, and orthodox priests are the core of the choir. For each and every one of them, singing of spiritual music is a very personal experience, and their singing is soaked with centuries-long tradition of monastery worship. Every visitor of Assumption cathedral is astonished by their powerful singing during the worship.

At this concert the choir performs chants of Russian spiritual composers Dmitry Bortniansky, Alexander Kastalsky, Pavel Chesnokov, Alexei Lvov, and others. Due to Father Matfey, a number of very complicated chants became such classics and staples of church music that they are easily recognized even by non-experts.
