Exclusive interview for “Zaryadye” Hall:
Jordi Savall, leader of Le Concert des Nations

“We are really responsible for what happens to the world in this moment”

“Yes, the core of music is to express emotions. And today we have to be sensitive to the nature because we are really responsible for what happens to the world in this moment. And I think it’s important to regard music compositions as parts of nature, for it is a nice way to say to our world: ‘We’ll save you’”.

These words were spoken in February 2020, two months before the Covid pandemic broke out, by Jordi Savall, a famous conductor, music scholar, and the founder of Le Concert des Nations orchestra. When Mr Savall said it, there were regular air services between countries, and we all could enjoy live music in concert venues.

In “Zaryadye”, Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations performed a programme of music rarities dubbed “Tempests, Storms, and Sea Festivities”.

We were lucky enough to have a long conversation with the conductor before the concert. Now we are glad to show this interview to you. With “Zaruadye”, maestro shared his plans, told about his way to the profession, recalled the music he was passionate about as a youngster, revealed why he chose this name for his orchestra, and reasons why he chose viola da gamba, and what circumstances made him fall in love with Russian culture.
