Mendelssohn, rare “Elijah” oratorio was performed at Zaryadye Hall
9 June 2021
On the 30 of May, the visitors enjoyed this rarely performed oeuvre
“Mendelssohn used biblical episodes relating to Elijah – 1 Kings 17:19 and 2 Kings 2:1 – to produce 42 scenes that make up a kind of ‘life of a saint’ genre, that starts from the opening recitative ‘…the Lord lives – the God of Israel before whom I stand’ to be finished by ‘Elijah was taken to Heaven’. There people fight for their true faith, profess the will of the higher power, destroy idols, work miracles, and denounce vices. There humans and angels sing”.
