Philosophy of jazz. Modal jazz movie snippets shown on screen
By the mid-50’s, some jazz musicians with cult following began to realized that sheer complication of harmony doesn’t work any longer. It was development of modal jazz principles that opened new ways for melodic improvisation. Many a contemporary jazz style are descendant to that pivotal discovery, while modal jazz innovators – such as trumpeter Miles Davis, tenor- and soprano saxophonist John Coltrane, and pianist Bill Evans – are revered as giants and genii.
Mikhail Mitropolsky is one of the most famous and oldest jazz critics in Russia, member of the international Jazz Journalists Association (JJA). Mitropolsky has been studying jazz and beyond for nearly 50 years now! He is a radio presenter, writer, and lecturer.
