Festival “Chereshnevy les” (“Cherry Forest”). Dee Dee Bridgewater and Igor Butman

Concert to mark Duke Ellingtone’s 120th anniversary

Igor Butman, Moscow Jazz Orchestra, and a 3-times “Grammy” winner Dee Dee Bridgewater perform on stage of “Zaryadye”. Their concert is a part of “Chereshnevy Les” open festival. The musicians introduce a special programme dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the legendary Duke Ellington.

If it wasn’t for Duke Ellington, the destiny of jazz would have been different, and it is not an exaggeration. Duke’s charisma and energy were strong enough to make him the outstanding jazzman.

“I’m so goddamn unstable”, he once said, commenting on his prolific creativeness. “Once completed anything, I just can’t stop, I always want to try and do something new”. You can say the same about the musicians who will celebrate Duke.

Dee Dee Bridgewater, for instance, is the kind of a superstar that knows how to conquer most sophisticated – or spoilt for choice – audience. With her unique voice, she is definitely one of the best jazz female singers of 20th century, and her CV includes work with greatest names of jazz, from Dizzy Gillespie to Dexter Gordon, from Sonny Rollins to Ray Charles.

Saxophonist and band leader Igor Butman is rightfully considered the main ambassador of Russian jazz to the world. His Moscow Jazz orchestra, founded in 1999, for the 20 years has proven itself as one of the leading orchestras of the world, and as a catalyst of the fine art of jazz music here in this country. In 2018, the big band became the first orchestra to play at the world’s main jazz event, All-Star Global Concert within the International Jazz Day. The big band frequently plays with the big stars like Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker, New York Voices, George Benson, Joe Lovano, Billy Cobham, Kevin Mahogany, Gary Burton, Kurt Elling, and saxophonist Bill Evans among many others.

“Chereshnevy Les” is a unique project. Started as a small music festival, it had rapidly grown into one of the most important events of Moscow cultural life. The Festival discovers and introduces new names and experimental projects, as well as established artists. Igor Butman took part in the Festival from the very beginning. “From cherry orchard to cherry forest” is the underlying metaphor of the festival.
