Music, poetry, painting. Three arts united.

People have been dreaming of such synthesis of arts – with highest achievements united – for centuries. Konstantin Khabensky, Yuri Bashmet, and “Novaya Rossiya” orchestra made this dream come true with the programme “Parallel Worlds. Russian Art. 20th century. Part I”.

“Parallel Worlds” is a kind of a “3D” show, where music, visuals, and literature combined in a very tense solid composition. Music of Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Mosolov, and Khrennikov played by “Novaya Rossiya” is interspersed with poetry of Zabolotsky, Balmont, Mayakovsky, Bagritsky, and Annensky read by Russian international movie star Konstantin Khabensky (“Wanted”, etc). And during the performance, famous paintings of Repin, Plastov, Korovin, Vrubel, as well as other classical Russian-Soviet artist are shown on a big screen.

The opener of the concert is “Isle of the Dead”, arguably one of the most mystical pieces written by Rachmaninov. Rachmaninov was inspired by the painting of Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin, and some projections of the picture would be shown while the music plays.

The underlying idea of this 3D-show is a trip through time. The audience does pass by basic stages of Russian culture of the past century, from the symbolism and mysticism (“Isle of the Dead”) to folk-oriented modernism (Stravinsky), from Prokofiev’s constructivism to “industrial” of Mosolov and social realism of Khrennikov. The poetry prepares the audience to the spirit and emotion of the music played, while paintings adds to this mood.
