Many things bind together the legendary Leonard Bernstein and Russia. First, he was a student of Serget Koussevitsliy, who tenderly called him “Lyonechka” (diminuitive of Leonid). Then, in the USA, he was one of the most passionate advocates of Russian music. In 1959, he performed in the Bolshoy Zal of Mosco Conservatory with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In his golden years, the maître befriended Vladimir Spivakov, whom he first saw on stage during Salzburg Festival in 1984. There’s no wonder then that it’s Spivakov’s National Philharmonic of Russia that would perform at the tribute concert for 100 year since the Leonard Bernstein’s birth. The conductor of the concert is Ken-David Masur, who symbolically took the baton from the hands of his great father, Kurt Masur.
