Soloists of Nizhniy Novgorod.
Conductor and soloist –
Maxim Yemelyanychev

The Soloists of Nizhniy Novgorod chamber orchestra is justly considered to be one of the leading chamber orchestra of Russia today.

This ensemble exists since the 80’s of the past centuries under different names. Its modern name, Soloists of Nizhniy Novgorod, accurately reflects the sense of the orchestra, which is made up of vivid individuals. The Soloists are well known far beyond Nizhniy Novgorod area, for they perform in Moscow, St Petersburg, and German Essen. The average annual number of its concerts is 60, or more, with world class soloists being frequent collaborators.

Not only pure musical projects, but a “synthetic”, fusion af art, is the feature of the ensemble. Ancient and modern music are among the Orchestra’s priorities.

In the autumn of 2004, Soloists of Nizhniy Novgorod led by German violinist, conductor, and period performance expert Christoph Mayer put into practice their project called “Practics of Historically Informed Performance”. The orchestra stages 3 opera Singspiels; played several Russian and Nizhniy Novgorod premieres of 17th-18th music; founded in their native city international festival called “BAROQUE & CLASSIC Nizhniy Novgorod” Новгород».

Nowadays, for some historically informed music projects the Orchestra collaborates with Maxim Yemelyanychev, one of the most interesting musicians of the young generation. Our frequent visitors got acquainted with him last year, he was the conductor of IL Pomo d'Oro during Joyce DiDonato’s performance “In War&Peace:Harmony”.

Maxim is a disciple of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. He is laureate of numerous international competitions as both harpsichord and hammerklavier virtuoso. It was harpsichord that led Maxim to collaboration with either Il Pomo d’Oro and Teodor Currentzis’s musicAeterna. Now Yemelyanychev is extremely in demand in the whole world. In recent years, he was awarded some of the most prestigious prizes, from Russian “Gold Mask” to ECHO Klassik and International Opera Awards. From the season of 2019-2020 Yemelyanychev is the leader of Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

It is that artist that the symphonic trend of the Soloists is related to. In 2017, French record label Aparté Music produced the first collaborative album of the musicians, that contains Beethoven’s Third Symphony and The Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn by Johannes Brahms.
This night, music of Viennese classics is performed along with an oeuvre of our contemporary.

Joseph Haydn is the inventor of symphony as a form. He himself wrote 108 pieces of this genre. Sometimes titles reflect content. Thus, his early symphonies, the 6th, 7th , and 8th bear such nicknames as “Le matin” (“The Morning”), “Le midi” (“The Noon”), and “Le soir” (“Evening”), respectively. two late symphonies, 82 and 83, are paired. The one is called “Bear Symphony”, the other “La poule”, French for “The Hen”. In the latter you’ll hear oboe mimic cackle!

Mozart created his Concerto #17 around the same time as Haydn worked on his “Hen”. And Mozart’s work, too, is related to a bird. On the 24th of May, 1784, Mozart wrote a financial note: “Starling the bird. 34 Kreuzers”. “It was beautiful!” he added this exclamation, and a changed rondo from the concert that he had composed earlier this spring, on the 12th of April. The legend says that the bird in question had whistled its own funny rendition of the Mozart’s theme, so the delighted composer would buy the bird immediately.

Not a single time did Soloists of Nizhniy Novgorod perform “Green DNK” (2000) of Pavel Karmanov with Maxim Yemelyanychev as conductor. The piece is dedicated to Tatiana Grindenko of Opus Posth, thus the title is a word play, that hints at the energy of green colour, and genetic information of DNA (‘DNK’ in Russian), thus reflection the drive of the music that is filled with love to life and joy of it.
