Andrei Ioniță was born on 1 January 1994. He graduated from both the Iosif Sava School of Music No 1 in Bucharest, having studied under Ani Marie Paladi, as well as the Saint Sava National College in Bucharest. He is currently studying at the Berlin Universität der Künste under Professor Jens Peter Maintz.

Andrei Ioniță has taken part in master-classes with world-renowned cellists such as Steven Isserlis, David Geringas, Gary Hoffman, Heinrich Schiff, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and Bruno Cocset. In 2014 Andrei Ioniţă played alongside artists such as Gidon Kremer and Christian Tetzlaff as a participant of the Kronberg Academy Project Chamber Music Connects the World.

He first attracted international attention when he won both the 2nd prize and the Special Prize for best interpretation of a commissioned piece at the ARD Competition in September 2014 in Munich. He was also awarded 2nd prize at the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann 2014, which took place only a few weeks after the ARD Competition. Andrei Ioniță was the recipient of the 1st prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (2015); the competition is held every four years.

Ioniță performs a Giovanni Battista Rogeri cello crafted in 1671, on loan from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben in Hamburg.
