Pratum Integrum. Tiranno amor

Soloist – Valer Barna-Sabadus, countertenor (Romania)
One of the most prominent counter tenors of the world now is Romania-born German singer Valer Barna-Sabadus. Granted with gorgeous male soprano, he sang numerous parts in baroque opera, those of tzars and emperors, from Nero (“The Coronation of Poppaea” by Monteverdi) and Jason (the Cavalli opera of the same title) to Handel’s Xerxes and Theseus. The Guardian notices that his “coloratura technics is impressive”, while the Bay Area Reporter praises his “intonation precision, fluency of vivid passages, the beauty of his timbre, and the ability to deliver drama”.

His breakthrough role was Semira in Vinci's “Artaserse”. The spectacle was shown to great acclaim in Nancy, Lausanne, Paris, Vienna, and Amsterdam among other cities, and the release of CD and DVD soon followed. Today Valer Sabadus is a recognized maestro and two-times “Echo” winner. He is a frequent performer at European early music festivals, and as a soloist he sings with the Court Chapel of Munich and the Basel Chamber Orchestra, as well as with Accademia Bizantina и Il pomo d’oro. He is a prolific record artist exclusively signed to Sony Classical; in the fall of 2018 the label released his latest album with arias to the poems of Metastasio, the ones that famous Farinelli used to sing.

For the first time, the Tiranno amor programme was presented by Sabado a year ago, at the Handel’s festival in Karlsruhe. The title to the concert is a snippet from Handel’s Crudel tiranno Amor. The main character is a prisoner of love who damns the feeling, but at the same time he is full of hopes and faithful to his beloved one. Besides the cantata, Sabadus will present different opera characters, from the young Acis to Rinaldo the knight, as well as Farnace the Tzar.

In Russia, Sabadus performs with Pratum Integrum. The ensemble specializes at baroque music played at period instruments. This time they’ll perform baroque concerts and chaconnes, mainly German, by Endler, Albicastro, and Telemann. It’s worth recalling that the ensemble has been playing Telemann since the very day of its foundation. And a couple of years ago Pratum Integrum won Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for the recordings of the composer’s orchestral suites. And then Pratum Integrum was honored to perform at Telemann’s festival in Magdeburg.
